O presente trabalho pretende investigar as concepções acerca da função social do professor, isto é, seu papel dentro da sociedade. Compreendemos que existem duas concepções em conflito, cada uma ligada a uma forma de organização do trabalho e da formação docentes: a que está presente nas políticas públicas educacionais, e aquela presente nos movimentos sociais de educação. Após investigar as duas concepções, concluímos que nas políticas públicas prevalece a concepção de professor tarefeiro, um professor sem autonomia que apenas cumpre procedimentos preestabelecidos, e que esta concepção está comprometida com interesses mercadológicos. Já nos movimentos sociais de educação, a concepção preponderante é a de professor intelectual, que concebe seu próprio trabalho; concepção esta que está ligada a uma visão emancipadora da educação e do mundo.
