En Espa ña, como en muchos países del mundo, los cuidados que se reciben al final de la vida suelen depender de las actitudes del médico o del equipo tratante, de las actitudes y las creencias de los familiares, y del acuerdo o desacuerdo entre profesionales y familia, sin tener todo esto mucho que ver con lo que desea o hubiera deseado el/la paciente.Todas las personas deseamos tener lo que consideramos «una buena muerte», pero la buena muerte varía como si fuera un sorteo.En un número reciente del British Medical Journal varios artículos proponen no reducir los debates sobre los cuidados al final de la vida a un debate polarizado y estéril sobre la muerte asistida que no conduce a ningún resultado; algunos/as autores/as proponen que la sociedad en conjunto debería concentrarse en organizar la ayuda a morir para que cada persona pueda hacerlo de la forma que mejor le parezca; y la editora en jefe propone encuestar a los/las médicos/as y confrontar los resultados de esta encuesta con la postura de la British Medical Association, contraria hasta la fecha a la ayuda médica a morir 1 .En los últimos a ños, Gaceta Sanitaria ha publicado varios artículos sobre los cuidados al final de la vida.En este número se incluye una serie de artículos para informar y facilitar el debate entre los/las profesionales y las asociaciones de salud pública sobre los temas que presentamos a continuación.
