Dans un contexte de rivalité permanente entre catholiques et laïques autour de l’encadrement de la jeunesse, la Ligue de l’enseignement a favorisé l’organisation de Fêtes départementales de la Jeunesse. À partir de 1935, les directives nationales, appuyées sur des expériences antérieures multiples, promeuvent la fête symbolique, au côté des démonstrations physiques. Fêtes populaires de plein air, avec défilés et chants, ces grands rassemblements permettent aux représentants de l’État et aux élus républicains d’exalter la République et l’école laïque dans les discours. Reposant sur le militantisme des instituteurs et plus largement sur l’ordre primaire, ces fêtes ont perduré après-guerre avant de disparaître au début des années 1970.
