Les Science and Technology Studies ont émergé, comme discipline syncrétique centrée sur les savoirs, dans le sillage des mouvements de contestation des années 1960 et 1970. Le marxisme est alors une référence incontournable des historiens et sociologues des sciences qui explorent – et dénoncent – les modes de domination et d’aliénation associés aux pratiques scientifiques. Peu à peu cependant, un glissement s’opère au sein des Science Studies : le référentiel politique contestataire s’estompe et la pensée marxiste, si elle est encore parfois mobilisée, est singulièrement transformée, et trahie. Dans les années 1980 et 1990, une série d’études sur les machines témoigne de cette rupture progressive avec le socle subversif du marxisme. Abandonné dans les années 1990, le corpus marxiste n’est plus une référence pour les Science Studies. Depuis peu, cependant, le retour du refoulé semble ne plus avoir de limite, puisque les textes des auteurs marxistes d’avant le second conflit mondial, comme Edgar Zilsel, sont republiés, et que la généalogie des Science Studies n’exclut plus, dans son histoire officielle en cours de constitution, cette matrice marxiste fantomatique.
