Les différents diffuseurs offrent à leurs auditoires respectifs ni tout à fait la même information, ni le même traitement de l'actualité. En tenant compte de variables qu'on peut mesurer, comme le temps de parole accordé aux acteurs politiques ou le temps consacré par chaque chaîne aux nouvelles communes, Denis Monière et Julie Fortier montrent, chiffres à l'appui, que le journalisme canadien obéit, comme on s'y attendait, à des règles différentes selon le public auquel il s'adresse. Ils montrent aussi cependant que l'information est moins tributaire qu'on pourrait le croire des mandats officiels : ce n'est pas tant le statut public ou privé d'une chaîne qui importe en ce cas, que sa langue de diffusion.
