Abstract
Certains chercheurs proposent de considérer le discours sur l’universalité de l’anglais comme un « mythe », soit comme une construction culturelle enracinée dans l’histoire impériale britannique. À l’aide d’une approche inspirée du courant d’étude sur les mythes sociaux, l’article analyse le rôle joué par ce mythe de l’anglais langue universelle dans les débats sur l’enseignement de l’anglais au Québec pendant l’entre-deux-guerres. Dans un premier temps, il retrace la genèse du mythe dans le contexte de l’Inde coloniale britannique puis, dans un second temps, il analyse comment certains acteurs canadiens-français se sont approprié ou ont contesté cette construction discursive extérieure. Il propose enfin une réflexion sur les conséquences de son appropriation dans l’interprétation qu’ont fait les Québécois de leur propre histoire, de leur langue et dans la définition de leur identité.
