Pour penser les perspectives nouvelles de la communication, il importe d’analyser les ruptures et les transformations dont font l’objet les espaces d’échanges et de dialogues. D’abord, l’espace public articule l’histoire, les sciences du politique et les sciences de l’information et de la communication dans ce que l’on peut appeler une « logique de la médiation ». Ce qui définit l’espace public est la confrontation des identités politiques dans une géographie indistincte. Ensuite, l’espace public se fonde sur une articulation particulière du réel de la loi et de la contrainte, du symbolique du discours, de l’énonciation et de la représentation, et de l’imaginaire du projet ou de la crainte. La communication qui se déploie dans l’espace public est médiatée : cela signifie qu’elle repose sur une médiation, c’est-à-dire sur la mise en œuvre d’une dialectique entre la dimension singulière de la société et sa dimension collective. Enfin, l’espace public, espace de la médiation et de la communication, est ce que l’on peut appeler un « champ d’évidences ». Ce qui définit l’espace public est la manifestation constante des identités et des acteurs qui s’y confrontent les uns aux autres.
