Ideals-Based Accountability and Reputation in Select Family Firms
Bibliographic record
Abstract
In response to the unreliability of traditional monitoring mechanisms for ensuring sustainable corporate accountability and reputation, we develop the phenomenon of ideals-based accountability (IBA) which we have witnessed at work in several long-thriving family businesses. The owners and managers of these firms eschew individualism and materiality in the pursuit of ideals such as democracy and the betterment of the human condition. Accountability is to these ideals not to outcomes such as profitability or even reputation. However, IBA, we argue, is a robust mode of corporate conduct, characterized by particular missions, leadership, socialization cultures, and stakeholder relationships which do indeed contribute to sustainable reputation with low monitoring costs. We contrast IBA with traditional forms of accountability, and differentiate it from related stakeholder, stewardship, and CSR perspectives. The second part of the paper illustrates the manifestations of IBA in the conduct of five long-lived and highly reputable family enterprises. These historical examples are used to generate propositions to help others advance and empirically evaluate our theorizing.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
