Louis-Joseph Papineau occupe une place centrale dans l'histoire politique et intellectuelle du Québec. Acteur historique de premier plan et figure mythique, il est surtout connu par ses écrits publics. Ce qu'on connaît moins, c'est l'importance de sa correspondance privée et l'influence qu'ont pu avoir ses exils sur son parcours politique. Les lettres de Papineau constituent la seule documentation qui nous permette de comprendre, par exemple, son décrochage du britannisme après son voyage en Angleterre en 1823, ses attentes déçues par rapport à la France après les Rébellions, sa vision de la place du Québec sur le continent américain. Les nombreuses relations épistolaires qu'il a su entretenir pendant plus de quarante ans révèlent des aspects nouveaux, souvent inattendus, de sa pensée et de son action politique. Personne n'était mieux placé qu'Yvan Lamonde pour révéler les facettes encore méconnues de ce personnage.
