Abstract
Gardens in the Mittel East were an indulgence no landlord could afford. Most of them were transformed into roughcast unyielding grey concrete backyards, which fed on the tender kneecaps of our native young. The quarter itself, was overrun by a plague of unsanitary tenements and ill-lit workshops. Unexepectedly, patches of greenery in the shape of small parks and squares, did survive the brick onslaught. They were protected from human depredation by threatening notices and an iron barrier of spearheaded railings. But there were larger open spaces on which no man could build. Here, under a clear blue sky and in comparatively fresh air, a few moments of peace could be snatched from out of the unceasing battle for existence.
