Abstract
De son retour d’Europe en 1936 à son décès, André Laurendeau (1912-1968) fut l’un des intellectuels majeurs du Québec. Appartenant à la mouvance nationaliste, impliqué dans le mouvement des Jeunes-Canada, il dirige L’Action nationale (1937-1943,1949-1953) ; il est chef provincial du parti du Bloc populaire et député à l’Assemblée législative du Québec (1944-1948), avant d’entrer au Devoir en 1947 où, après avoir été éditorialiste, il agit comme rédacteur en chef à compter de 1957. En 1963, à la demande du premier ministre du Canada, il devient co-président de la Commission royale d’enquête sur le bilinguisme et le biculturalisme ; son décès prématuré l’empêchera de conduire à leur terme les travaux de cette commission. Romancier et dramaturge, animateur de télévision, c’est à titre d’éditorialiste du Devoir qu’il commente quotidiennement l’actualité et exerce son influence sur la société. Adversaire résolu et critique implacable du gouvernement Duplessis dont il dénonce inlassablement les inconséquences, les carences et les vices, il s’intéresse de près à l’éducation et il multipliera les textes appelant à une réforme en profondeur de tout le système d’enseignement. Dans ce texte de 1952, il met en lumière les effets dramatiques du sous-financement de l’éducation et somme l’État d’assumer pleinement ses responsabilités.
