Abstract
À l’opposé de Maurice Lamontagne, l’historien Michel Brunet (1917-1985), professeur à l’Université de Montréal et, avec ses collègues Guy Frégault et Maurice Séguin, animateur de l’« École de Montréal », d’inspiration nationaliste et pessimiste, développe une argumentation profondément différente. Selon Michel Brunet, l’aide financière du gouvernement fédéral aux universités s’inscrit dans une tendance historique lourde de centralisation croissante du pouvoir aux mains de l’État fédéral. Face à cette tendance, si les Canadiens français tiennent à leur identité et à leur culture propres, ils n’ont d’autre choix que de consentir les sacrifices financiers nécessaires à cette fin et d’amener leur gouvernement provincial à assumer pleinement ses responsabilités en matière d’éducation. Pour Brunet, l’« autonomisme » purement verbal et défensif de Duplessis doit céder la place à un État provincial énergique, interventionniste et assumant pleinement ses responsabilités.
