Abstract
En instituant, en 1961, une commission royale d’enquête sur l’éducation, le gouvernement libéral de Jean Lesage donne suite à une demande souvent exprimée au cours des années 1950. Ainsi, en 1950, Paul-Émile Gingras (1917-1997), enseignant, secrétaire général du collège Jean-de-Brébeuf (1954-1961), directeur des études du même établissement (1961-1964), et dernier recteur du collège Sainte-Marie (1968-1969), puis chercheur en éducation, fait suite à diverses suggestions qui s’expriment dans le milieu et, dans un article publié par L’Action nationale, établit le programme d’une enquête complète sur l’éducation au Québec ; ce faisant, il dresse le catalogue des grands problèmes affligeant cette éducation, notamment au secondaire.
