Abstract
Cannabis sativa is an herbal product that is the source of a dizzying array of compounds, surrounded by mystique and stigma, acting through remarkable neuropharmacological mechanisms, and very much in the public eye in Canada. This presentation seeks to explore the complex world of cannabis science and policy through a lens of research. The basics of cannabis botany and pharmacology will be reviewed, clinical evidence for safety and efficacy will be discussed and criticized, and implications for future research on cannabis and cannabinoids will be considered. Finally, recent policy changes are raising intriguing opportunities for the regulation of cannabinoids as natural health products will be considered.
