Abstract
Policy-makers, service providers and clinicians have caught on to what patient advocates have been saying for decades: people living with mental health problems can enjoy meaningful lives in their communities and achieve their full potential with the support of the recovery approach. The term recovery does not have one standard definition in mental health. However, there is general agreement among experts that it refers to, as the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) states, “living a satisfying, hopeful, and contributing life, even when there are ongoing limitations caused by mental health problems and illnesses.” Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, recovery is a unique path that takes into account the individual’s wants and needs.
