Abstract
La composante montréalaise de la Fédération des Sociétés Saint-Jean-Baptiste incarne un nationalisme plus radical que celui du reste du mouvement. Cela transparaît dans son mémoire à la commission Parent qui veut arrimer étroitement les pratiques éducatives à l’affirmation du fait national canadien-français. La SSJB de Montréal propose le modèle d’une « éducation nationale » qui puisse renforcer le sentiment et la conscience de l’identité collective originale des nouvelles générations. Il faut soigner tout particulièrement la maîtrise de la langue française et la connaissance du milieu, par la géographie et l’histoire, et l’étude de la civilisation nationale. Le sens chrétien de la vie fait aussi partie de l’éducation nationale, ce qui implique la conservation du caractère confessionnel du système scolaire.
