Abstract
El conflicto en torno a la reclamacion mayoritaria en la sociedad catalana del ejercicio del derecho a decidir su futuro, incluida la independencia, continua estando en el centro de la agenda politica y parece estar lejos de verse resuelto por una via democratica y legal. Esta situacion de bloqueo contrasta con otros casos que, aun siendo diferentes en mas de un aspecto, como los de Quebec y Canada o Escocia y el Reino Unido de Gran Bretana, contienen rasgos similares. En ambos conflictos hemos podido comprobar como el derecho a la autodeterminacion y a la secesion no concierne solo a paises colonizados o bajo dictaduras, sino que tambien puede plantearse y se ha podido ejercer en Estados del Norte con regimenes de democracia liberal.
