Abstract
Les insectes jouent un rôle important dans la tradition orale yup’ik du sud-ouest de l’Alaska. Même s’ils sont considérés comme des parasites indésirables dans certains contextes, ces minuscules êtres possèdent et peuvent donner une grande puissance. Certains existent depuis les tout débuts de l’humanité, à l’époque où Corbeau a créé les humains alors que tout était neuf. Selon les aînés yup’iks, aucun autre animal n’est autant associé au pouvoir de guérir que la chenille, et aucun autre animal n’a la capacité de consommer ou de détruire un corps – animal ou humain – que l’asticot ou le ver. Tous les insectes possèdent la capacité de penser et, comme pour les animaux, on considère qu’ils traitent les humains comme ces derniers eux-mêmes les traitent. Jusqu’à ce jour, on indique que deux types de chenilles poilues et glabres peuvent se présenter à ceux, parmi les humains, qu’elles considèrent comme purs et leur conférer le pouvoir de guérir. Les humains qui en héritent ont été assez sages pour surmonter leurs craintes. Ils ont accueilli ces petites bestioles sans être effrayés par leur présence.
