Abstract
Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout. Tomson Highway. Vancouver: Talonbooks, 2005.93 pp. $15.95 sc. Tomson Highway's return to writing for stage after success of his 1998 novel Kiss of Fur Queen might initially seem a reluctant one. His latest play, Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, was in fact commissioned by Kamloops, BC-based Secwepemc Cultural Education Society and Western Canada Theatre, where it debuted on 24 January 2004. Also, 2005 Talonbooks print edition of stage play has author's unmistakable fingerprints all over it, all of which transform text into a book to be read coherently as much as a performance to be potentially staged. Written for obvious reasons in English, Highway notes before prologue that his characters would not actually have spoken English, but that they would be speaking Shuswap--a language driven by laughing deity, Trickster. A better currency for Canadian theatre's own Fur Queen/Trickster to deal in is difficult to imagine. Ernestine takes place on Thursday, 25 August 1910, as members of Shuswap Nation in environs of Kamloops frantically prepare for Prime Minister Laurier's visit. The four female characters argue, joke, cavort, and rant with (and against) each other as they prepare various dishes they are to serve at imminent banquet for prime minister. Ernestine Shuswap, in charge of preparing a special trout for the Big Kahoona of Canada, acts as ring-leader of group, steering conversations into controversial racial, cultural, and religious territories where Highway is at his ribald, cutting, and political best. Isabel Thompson, in charge of baking 624 Saskatoon berry pies, provides much of play's postcolonial commentary through her stilted religious and cultural stances. Annabelle Okanagan, grouchy antagonist of bunch, is in charge of preparing beaver (a sexual euphemism that Highway exploits repeatedly and even defends in an endnote), and young Delilah-Rose Johnson is forever sewing a tablecloth which occasionally doubles for Thompson River. The circus of preparations for big event is troubled by two major realities, first of which is that Shuswap lands have been recently re-assigned and taken from their control. They are not allowed to trap beaver, fish river, pick berries, or graze their cattle on land that had been, literally yesterday, theirs. The second problem is that Laurier is fast approaching--fifty miles away, then twenty-five, then ten--and nothing seems to be getting done. He becomes a sort of Godot around whose absence everyone revolves, though whose legislative omnipresence hangs oppressively over play's every action. …
