Abstract
Selon Frenhofer, le peintre génial du Chef-d’oeuvre inconnu de Balzac, la peinture, celle qui fait la vie, est un art de la démesure, du dépassement de la limite, du débordement. Nous retrouvons ici un des thèmes du mythe de Diane et Actéon : voir ce qui ne peut être vu, la déesse nue. Le peintre tout comme Actéon est un voyeur, et ce qu’il voit (ou montre) décide de son destin tragique. Cet article voudrait montrer que les enjeux entre le chasseur et le peintre ne sont pas si éloignés les uns des autres. La Belle Noiseuse, qui est le nom que Frenhofer donne à son oeuvre, tout comme la déesse, ne se laisse pas prendre, personne ne peut rendre compte de sa beauté, qui d’ailleurs ne semble exister que par le voile qui la recouvre.
