Lévi-Strauss et Derrida nous aident à définir ce que pourrait être une culture et une identité. Le téléphone intéressait Derrida, mais les romanciers s’intéressent aussi ben aux moyens de communication (télévision, journal, haut-parleurs) qu’à la censure, voire l’autocensure. Les fonctions non différenciées de la parole et de l’écrit sont au service d’une écriture de soi dans un panorama historique fait de nouveaux départs—nationalistes ou d’immigration. Les fictions des origines donneraient priorité à une réflexion personnelle axée sur la démocratie contournant les censures, contre les impératifs oraux, renversant les priorités de Rousseau qui n’avait pas prévu les communications orales à distance et qui n’impliquent pas de face à face rassembleur sur la place publique.
