Abstract
Louis XV avait du en 1763 ceder le Canada a l'Angleterre, mais tout de suite apres la Guerre de Sept Ans, la France guette l'occasion de la revanche. Cette occasion se presente bientot avec la revolte des Colonies americaines. Louis XVI en 1778 entre en guerre contre l'Angleterre. Si celle-ci est defaite, la France voudra-t-elle reprendre le Canada ? Les nouveaux Etats-Unis tenteront-ils de se l'annexer ? Les Canadiens essaieront-ils de former une nation libre ? Or, politique inattendue et secrete : pour limiter l'expansion des Etats-Unis ses allies, et leur faire sentir le besoin de lui rester fideles, la France tient a ce que le Canada demeure colonie britannique pour laisser au nord sur les Americains une menace permanente. Quant au Canada, il ne tente pas de se delivrer de sa metropole anglaise. Jeu de politique internationale dont l'historien Trudel rappelle ici avec commentaires les textes essentiels.
