Cadre de la recherche : Cet article propose un approfondissement des thèses de l’individualisation de la vie privée comme explication de l’infidélité conjugale. Il propose une analyse tenant compte des milieux sociaux où se diffusent prioritairement les représentations du « soi authentique » (les classes intermédiaires-supérieures ») et du genre. Objectifs : L’objectif principal de ce texte est de montrer que l’individualisation de la vie privée et le modèle de l’amour romantique trament les doubles vies, mais que celles-ci prennent appui sur un modèle familial traditionnel porté par les hommes. Méthodologie : Nous avons réalisé trente-neuf entretiens biographiques enregistrés d’une durée de trois à six heures. Nous avons retenu des personnes qui ont ou ont eu une relation extraconjugale de plus de deux ans, de manière régulière. Une analyse de blogues a également été réalisée. Résultats : Les logiques sociales de l’extraconjugalité se rapprochent de celles des séparations aux mêmes âges et dans les mêmes milieux sociaux. Cependant, les ressorts des parcours conjugaux caractérisés par une liaison clandestine durable sont singuliers en termes de genre. Conclusions : La quête d’un « soi authentique » dans les relations clandestines existe chez les hommes et les femmes. En revanche, ces dernières adhèrent prioritairement au modèle contemporain de l’amour romantique alors que les hommes sont, eux, porteurs d’un modèle familial traditionnel qui suppose l’indissolubilité de la famille. Dans ces liaisons qui durent plusieurs années, les représentations des femmes tendent à se rapprocher de celles des hommes. Contribution : Cet article contribue à un approfondissement des analyses – rares – de l’infidélité conjugale. Il montre que l’individualisation qui prévaut à la quête de « soi » dans un amour hors du couple officiel est genrée.
