Notre mémoire se propose d’étudier trois séries de commandes photographiques passées au studio Notman – le plus important studio de photographie de Montréal – entre 1858 et 1909. Tout d’abord, en 1858, la compagnie de chemin de fer du Grand-Tronc demande à William Notman de photographier la construction du pont Victoria. Ensuite, en 1871, Notman choisit Benjamin Baltzly pour accompagner le Geological Survey et le Pacific Railway Survey en Colombie-Britannique. Enfin, en 1884, William McFarlane Notman est engagé pour documenter la construction du Canadian Pacific Railway et promouvoir les paysages de l’Ouest du Canada. Les commandes seront répétées régulièrement jusqu’en 1909. Face à ces trois corpus de photographies, nous menons une double enquête : chercher pourquoi ces différents commanditaires eurent recours à la photographie, qui était un médium neuf, coûteux et peu pratique, mais aussi, comprendre l’impact de ces photographies sur le public. L’analyse systématique des choix de composition des photographies, dont l’appartenance au champ artistique n’est pas évidente, et l’examen précis de leur diffusion, nous a permis d’affirmer qu’elles véhiculent une mythologie canadienne de l’âge moderne, liée à l’esprit d’exploration et à la première révolution industrielle. Ces mythes sont ceux du progrès, de la domination de l’Homme sur la nature, de la conquête de l’Ouest et de la construction de la Nation.
