La production porcine québécoise crée des problèmes locaux sévères de surplus de lisier entraînant l'eutrophisation des eaux surface et la contamination des eaux souterraines. Une technologie de traitement du lisier, le BIOSORMD-lisier, a donc été est mis au point par le Centre de Recherche Industrielle du Québec (CRIQ). Il s'agit d'un biofiltre à support organique à base de tourbe et de copeaux de bois visant le double traitement du lisier de porc et des odeurs générées dans les porcheries. Ce procédé permet d'obtenir d'excellents rendements d'épuration quant à l'enlèvement du carbone et de l'ammonium. Toutefois, les conditions d'opérations du procédé ne permettent pas d'achever la dénitrification ce qui entraîne une production significative de protoxyde d'azote (N₂O); un gaz à effet de serre très préoccupant. L'objectif de l'étude est donc de déterminer l'effet de certaines conditions d'opération (aération intermittente, volume et type de milieu filtrant et source d'alcalinité) sur la dénitrification et la production de N₂O. Pour se faire, trois biofiltres pilotes (1,2 m x 0,4 m), ayant des milieux filtrants différents, ont été soumis à une aération intermittente (4 heures aéré pour 4 heures anoxie) puis à une aération continue. Un des principaux facteurs affectant la dénitrification et les émissions de N₂O par le procédé est le taux d'aération. En effet, les émissions de N₂O ont été supérieures sous aération continue (280 (±114) g N-N₂O/ m³ de lisier traité) comparativement à l'aération intermittente (36 (± 9) g N-N₂0/ m³ de lisier traité). En plus d'améliorer les performances des biofiltres, une réduction de l'aération diminuerait considérablement les coûts d'opération du procédé. Cependant, afin de confirmer avec certitude cette hypothèse, l'étude aurait du prévoir une répétition des cycles d'aération afin de discriminer, entre le temps et le type d'aération, celui ayant le véritable effet sur les performances du système.
