Dans un premier temps, ce mémoire porte une attention aux justifications historiques qui ont donné lieu à la philosophie au sein de la formation générale obligatoire, d'abord en France, et ensuite au Québec. Dans un deuxième temps, il propose de rendre compte d'une tension inhérente à la redéfinition actuelle de cet enseignement, à savoir l'entrelacement de sa visée perfectionniste et sociale avec la mise en valeur de l'autonomie intellectuelle de chacune et chacun. Pour ce faire, nous réinterprétons un moyen théorique qui est défendu par plusieurs afin de supporter cette autonomie : la neutralité axiologique. Cette réflexion culmine vers une question centrale : est-il souhaitable que l'enseignante ou l'enseignant dissimule son opinion sur divers sujets dans le contexte d'une classe de cours ? En dernière instance, nous défendons que : ce n'est pas nécessairement le cas, mais aussi que : plusieurs moyens doivent être mobilisés afin de favoriser l'autonomie intellectuelle des étudiantes et des étudiants.
