Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Accurately measuring the magnetic field in the ISM is essential for understanding star formation processes. We searched archival data of the Submillimeter Array for evidence of circular polarization in common molecular tracers, most notably CO. This circular polarization possibly arises from anisotropic resonant scattering, which would imply that some background linearly polarized radiation is being converted to circular polarization. We find circular polarization in the star-forming regions NGC 7538 (in CO) and Orion KL (in CO and SiO) as well as in the carbon star IRC+10216 (in CS, SiS, H13CN, and CO) at high enough levels to suggest that the presence of circular polarization in these spectral lines is common for such objects. This implies that measuring circular polarization is important when studying magnetic fields through the linear polarization of molecular spectral lines in the interstellar medium. We also provide a simple python wrapper for the miriad data reduction package.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
