Desde el último cuarto del siglo XIX aparecieron en las provincias argentinas un conjunto de relatos vindicatorios sobre el pasado nacional. En Santa Fe, Ramón Lassaga optó con su Historia de López (1881) por “desagraviar” la memoria del caudillo acusado en los relatos porteño-céntricos de “localista”, para “demostrar” sus aportes a la unidad nacional. Este trabajo operó como precursor de una historiografía local vindicatoria que, a partir del siglo XX, encontró en J. L. Busaniche a uno de sus continuadores. En Estanislao López y el federalismo del litoral (1927), este último intentó “evidenciar” que los líderes federales habían sido los verdaderos iniciadores de la democracia liberal, contrariamente a las injurias vertidas por la historiografía “unitaria” y “oficial”. Por lo tanto, en el presente artículo se analizarán los relatos de estos dos autores santafesinos, liberales y vindicadores, para demostrar que en el período en que emergen ambas obras el paisaje historiográfico era más rico y variado que lo que se pensó durante mucho tiempo. Incluso, pueden advertirse ciertos rasgos que, en la década siguiente, fueron presentados como “novedosos” por parte de los revisionistas.
