Abstract
Abstract Scholars have used the term “enchantment” to describe a variety of disparate intellectual trends, affective registers, and social developments. Yet despite its prevalence as an academic concept, appraisals of enchantment itself rather than dis enchantment or re ‐enchantment are, despite a few exceptions, practically nonexistent. This article considers recent scholarly work on disenchantment and re‐enchantment in order to trace the contours of enchantment itself. It concludes with an appraisal of enchantment as an academic category.
