Les enquêtes de Louis XIV et Colbert n’ont eu que peu d’effets en Nouvelle-France où la noblesse n’avait pas la même signification ni les mêmes privilèges qu’en métropole. L’authenticité des titres et la recherche d’usurpateurs n’ont guère tracassé les administrateurs de la colonie, mais elles préoccupent davantage les historiens qui se heurtent à la sempiternelle difficulté de départager les vrais des moins vrais nobles du Canada. Le statut et la qualité nobiliaire des anoblis canadiens, des nobles venus de France, des faux nobles et de leurs descendants sont perçus de façons différentes selon qu’on aborde la noblesse comme un ordre fermé aux critères d’appartenance légalement définis ou comme un fait social dans lequel la population coloniale accréditait sans réticences les nobles qui se présentaient comme tels.
