Abstract
Jean-Franois Gaultier, the successor of Michel Sarrazin, a physician from Lower Normandy, arrived in Quebec in 1742 with the status of “king’s physician.” His correspondence with the Paris Royal Academy of Sciences provided a detailed account of his climatologic, botanic, agricultural and medical observations. Gaultier belonged to the 18th century movement of meteorological medicine founded by Hippocrates and developed by Thomas Sydenham in England in the second half of the 17th century. The aim of this medical conception was to establish connections between meteorology and illness. According to contemporary historiography, Gaultier was the first French physician to officially represent this movement in the French settlement of America.
