Avec 7,7 % de part modale exprimée en tonnes transportées en 2013 1 , les trafics ferroviaires franco-allemands de marchandises restent secondaires dans les échanges commerciaux entre les plus deux grands marchés domestiques de l'UE. Cette situation reflète les effets de ruptures techniques et organisationnels imposés par une logique longtemps nationale des réseaux. Plus que pour les autres modes de transport, les systèmes ferroviaires hérités 1 Soit 4,225 Mt sur un total de 57,36 Mt selon les données Eurostat.
