Abstract
Treatment guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations to assist professionals in clinical decision making. They are a major tool to assure and improve treatment quality and to overcome existing disparities. In the following article, we will attempt to summarize the therapeutic recommendations in major depressive disorder from a pharmacological stand point. The present synthesis of psychopharmacological recommendations in depression is based primarily on the 2009 version, updated in 2018, of the Guide to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE, 2009), the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association Guidelines (APA, 2010), the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments Guidelines, (CANMAT, 2016), Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Guidelines (RANZCP, 2015) and the recommendations proposed by the World Federation of Biological Psychiatric Societies (WFSBP 2013, 2015).
