L’utilisation des outils système d’information géographique (SIG) en dendrochronologie offre une excellente opportunité de développer davantage les analyses de cernes, notamment dans le contexte des forêts tropicales où les techniques d’analyses de cernes sont réputées compliquées et fastidieuses. Dans cette étude, deux approches de mesure de largeurs de cernes ont été comparées en faisant une simulation de l’échantillonnage de bois en « carotte » et en « barreau » à l’aide du logiciel SIG ArcMap. Les résultats de l’étude basés sur deux espèces d’arbres tropicaux (Milicia excelsa (Welw.) C.C. Berg et Pericopsis elata (Harms) Meeuwen) ont montré que les mesures de deux approches utilisées ne sont pas statistiquement différentes l’une de l’autre. Néanmoins, les séries de mesures obtenues par les deux voies ne sont pas totalement concordantes au seuil de 0,05 mm par la technique graphique de Bland–Altman. Dans l’ensemble, les statistiques de chronologies calculées sur les différentes séries suggèrent plus la mise en œuvre de mesure par l’approche « carotte », tout en utilisant une mosaïque d’images numériques de la section transversale complète de la rondelle. En s’inspirant de la méthode et des approches utilisées, il serait intéressant de développer les techniques d’estimation de croissance diamétrique et de surfaces avec des échantillons de type « disque ».
