Abstract
Generation after generation of imperial administrators took British sports to every far-flung outpost of the Empire. First to amuse themselves and to help cement relationships with indigenous elites. Second to introduce entire native populations to the idea that the British way of life was superior and demanded their respect. The threat of British sporting hegemony in Ireland was, by the last quarter of the nineteenth century, very real. In the Republic of Ireland, the early years of the Irish Free State, its role became that of a bulwark for the newly independent Ireland. In Ireland, there existed a relatively organised native sporting tradition which pre-dated the emergence of modern sport and of the British Empire. The adoption of British sports would be regarded by Ulster Protestants as part of their rightful inheritance rather than as the result of an imperialist imposition of an alien culture.
