Information needs, seeking and assessment of parents of gender creative children and transgender youth

Abstract
ABSTRACT Strong family support has been identified as key to mitigating negative health outcomes for gender creative children and transgender youth (GCCTY). While a variety of information resources exist for parents/caregivers of GCCTY, we have limited knowledge of which are most useful and why. This poster reports on preliminary analysis of an anonymous online survey of 103 parents/caregivers of GCCTY, ages 4–23, in the United States and Canada. The most commonly sought topics of information were general support for gender creative children, trans youth and their parents; however, a substantial minority also sought specific information related to medical or social transition and over 10% sought faith‐based information. The most useful sources tended to be those that both met information needs and filled affective needs such as normalizing and affirming the experiences and information needs of seekers.
