Settler and Indigenous Stories of Kingston/Ka’tarohkwi: A Case Study in Critical Heritage Pedagogy
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The article uses the example of a university course about the Indigenous and settler histories of Kingston, Ontario, and the Crawford Purchase that constitutes its treaty, to argue that critical heritage practice can importantly and effectively be embodied as critical pedagogy. Beginning with a personal genealogical reflection by the author whose family was granted land by King George III in 1796, the article describes the Crawford Purchase and some of the questions it raises. It articulates and contextualizes key principles of the course in question (look around you, look to your ancestors, be responsible, be eclectic, and don’t finish). Students in the course engage with the physical space around the university, with their own personal family histories, and with literature, art, and archival materials, in order to develop a multi-dimensional set of resources for their final projects. The essay illustrates how students have taken up the responsibility to understand and to activate awareness of treaty relations and ongoing colonialism.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
