Abstract
Le site de Tivoli, à trente kilomètres à l’est de Rome, en particulier l’acropole et ses deux temples, a joui d’une gloire presque continue dans l’histoire des lettres et des arts de l’époque moderne. Depuis la Renaissance, le site est considéré comme l’un des hauts lieux de pèlerinage artistique. Aux 17 e et 18 e siècles, presque tous les peintres de passage à Rome s’y rendent. Le temple rond en particulier – temple de la Sibylle ou de Vesta ? – devient un motif inlassablement représenté. Comment les amateurs et les artistes ont-ils perçu et construit ce lieu de l’art ? Comment son image a-t-elle évolué ? Comment s’est-elle accommodée de la naissance de l’archéologie moderne ou de celle du tourisme ? Cet article entend retracer la carrière de Tivoli comme lieu majeur de l’art en croisant les témoignages des artistes, des architectes et des écrivains, en particulier français.
