Abstract
Mademoiselle Clairon (1723-1803) est certainement l’une des plus grandes actrices de son siècle. Peu de temps avant sa mort, elle rédige ses mémoires en réponse aux discours diffamatoires entretenus à son sujet tout au long de sa carrière. De ce nombre, on compte l’Histoire de Mademoiselle Cronel, une série de textes à caractère érotique qui nourrit l’opprobre associé à la vie de coulisse, encore répudiée par la société du xviiie siècle. Cet article propose tour à tour une lecture des libelles diffamatoires et des Mémoires attachés au parcours de Mademoiselle Clairon afin d’éclairer la montée sociale de l’actrice. Ce cas particulier tend à montrer qu’en choisissant d’embrasser la carrière théâtrale, les femmes d’origines modestes comme Clairon se plaçaient en marge de la société et que cette position marginale permettait une émancipation sociale exceptionnelle pour l’Ancien Régime.
