Abstract Smart materials based actuators suffer from the nonlinear hysteresis effect. To achieve a high-precision positioning motion, the inverse compensator is commonly constructed to mitigate the hysteresis effect. However, the inverse compensator fails to work when the input saturation of the actuator occurs. In this paper, an inverse hysteresis compensator with an anti-saturation block is developed to deal with the hysteresis effect and the input saturation. The purpose of the proposed compensator is to use an open-loop approach to eliminate the compensation error caused by the input saturation. Experiments are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
