Abstract
Abstract Cheryl Sim’s installation, YMX: Migration, Land, and Loss after Mirabel, took as its starting point two reanimated Solari “split-flap” information displays from departure Gates 46 and 48 at the ill-fated Montreal-Mirabel International Airport. Co-curated by Matt Soar (Professor of Communication Studies) and Danica Evering (MA Media Studies), YMX was an immersive installation that explored complex narratives of displacement and forced migration. Instead of an archive that complies with narrative definition, the embodied experience of an art installation allows for a more willful archive with multiple accounts converging and conflicting through many voices. This text is a reflection on Sim’s work by Evering in five parts—Arrival, Angle, Future, Will, and Departure—which alternates between archival images and documentation of the installation, theoretical and historical analysis of the work in plain text, and tangled interjections in italics.
