Abstract
Neste artigo proponho apresentar uma análise de alguns aspectos da relação entre as Primeiras Nações e o Estado nação canadense, utilizando à guisa de exemplo a Primeira-nação Atikamekw, habitante do norte da província de Quebec. Para tanto, iniciarei o artigo com uma explanação seguida de crítica sobre o Indian Act, instrumento legal concernente aos direitos dos povos indígenas habitantes do território canadense. Meu intuito é o de demonstrar como muitos dos aspectos de dita lei podem ser entendidos como um poder tutelar. Além disso, debaterei o estabelecimento do sistema educacional de escolas residenciais, que teve sua criação e atuação integradas à lógica de um poder tutelar. Finalmente, analisarei alguns aspectos históricos do contato dos Atikamekw, e a forma atual como este povo atua em relação ao Estado canadense.
