Causative mechanism of microseismicity recorded in an underground mine

Abstract
Microseismicity is recorded in an underground mine by a network of 7 boreholes. The geometry of the event clusters suggests occurrence on a planar geological fault. We compute the Coulomb stress changes due to the vertical shafts and the horizonal tunnel networks to investigate the likelihood of fault reactivation based on their orientations and spatial locations with respect to the mine layout. Results show that the fault inferred from the microseismic event locations near the 480 m tunnel network and the main shaft is well oriented for reactivation. However, the static stresses created by the tunnels and shafts are insufficient to create shear slippage. An additional stress perturbation is required for fault reactivation to occur which may be provided by the vibrations due to the heavy machinery operational near the observed microseismicity.
