Abstract
The hydroxyapatite crystal plays a key role in the mechanical weight-bearing properties of bone and serves as a ready source of calcium (Ca) to support a number of Ca-dependent biological systems and to maintain blood ionized Ca within the normal range. The extracellular fluid (ECF) concentration of Ca is maintained within a rather narrow range because of the importance of the Ca ion to cellular functions including cell division, cell adhesion and plasma membrane integrity, protein secretion, muscle contraction, neuronal excitability, glycogen metabolism, and coagulation. The skeleton, the gut, and the kidney each play a major role in assuring Ca homeostasis. Tight regulation of the ECF calcium concentration is maintained through the action of Ca-sensitive cells which modulate the production of hormones. A major regulator of parathyroid gland secretion of PTH is ECF Ca. The parathyroid glands detect ECF Ca via a CaSR, which is a Gq protein-coupled receptor.
