Contested Places: Two Universities in Southern Ontario and the TRC

Abstract
Indigenous students face multiple challenges accessing post-secondary education. This SSHRC funded research explored the experiences of Indigenous students at two universities, we share their struggles and achievements also focusing on the university climates and the ways universities are or are not including more education about Indigenous history and colonial relations. We also explored the ways that the universities were engaging with the TRC calls to action and the impacts of that engagement on university policies and protocols. We make recommendations for how universities can become more welcoming places for Indigenous students and ways in which the TRC calls for action can be more effectively addressed by universities. TRC calls for incorporation of values and principles of FNMI peoples and provision of adequate funding to end the backlog of FNMI students entering post-secondary.
