À partir des années 1960, l'explosion démographique, l'essoufflement du modèle agrail'e et l'épuisement des terres, l'expansion des marchés et de l'État, ainsi que les divisions religieuses bouleversent les relations sociales dans les Hautes Terres du Chiapas. En quelques décennies, son centre recteur -dernier bastion métis d'une des régions indiennes les plus paradigmatiques du Mexique- devient le ref'uge de milliers de migrants tzotzils et tzeltals.
