Compositeur français né en 1965, connaisseur et interprète des répertoires baroques et classiques, mais empruntant aussi à la métrique antique et à la combinatoire médiévale, Brice Pauset édifie une oeuvre où l’usage d’instruments anciens, principalement le clavecin, porte l’influence de la musique française des xviie et xviiie siècles. Cet article entend nouer l’usage par Brice Pauset de ces instruments, leur facture et les tempéraments qui leur sont prescrits, ainsi que les techniques vocales anciennes, aux formes musicales dans lesquelles ils se déploient, notamment le choral, sur les traces de Bach, et le canon prolationnel, sur celles de Pierre de la Rue. L’article met ainsi en évidence un principe commun à plusieurs oeuvres de Brice Pauset, celui d’une accumulation de trois temporalités distinctes, et une exigence de rhétorique, sous le signe d’un procès dialectique de l’Histoire.
