Le fait de ne parler ni anglais ni franA§ais constitue souvent un obstacle important pour un emploi et un revenu rA©munA©rateurs au Canada et, selon une A©tude intitulA©e « Effets de la proximitA© linguistique sur l’assimilation professionnelle des immigrants hommes » (Rapport de recherche du RCCMTC no 144) par Alicia Adsera (UniversitA© Princeton) et Ana Ferrer (UniversitA© de Waterloo), la proximitA© linguistique, A savoir le degrA© de similitude linguistique entre la langue maternelle de l’immigrant et la langue du pays de destination, a au fil du temps un impact significatif sur l’A©volution du contenu des compA©tences professionnelles des emplois tenus par les immigrants, et peut aussi avoir des effets sur leurs salaires. La sA©lection et l’acceptation au Canada d’immigrants de plus en plus instruits depuis les annA©es 1990 n’a pas entraA®nA© une hausse importante de leurs revenus, tel qu’on aurait pu l’espA©rer compte tenu de l’informatisation croissante sur le milieu de travail qui aurait augmentA© l’importance des capacitA©s cognitives extraordinaires.
