DOSSIERLe secteur de Cap-Chat a connu plusieurs naufrages quand la circulation maritime s'est intensifiée sur le fleuve.À titre d'exemple, d'octobre 1845 à novembre 1846, on en compte pas moins de cinq.D'où l'urgence d'installer un phare à Cap-Chat qui se fera en trois époques et en trois technologies 1 .Le phare de Cap-Chat : trois époques, trois technologies D ès 1850, le commissaire des Travaux publics, William Hamilton Merritt, recommande fortement l'installation d'un phare à Cap-Chat.Il en recommande d'ailleurs une douzaine, dont un à Cap-des-Rosiers, à l'extrémité ouest d'Anticosti et à Sept-Îles entre autres.Or, les recommandations tardent souvent à se réaliser.Ce n'est qu'en 1870, après maintes démonstrations d'organismes ou de compagnies responsables du développement du commerce maritime, que des crédits furent débloqués pour l'installation d'une « tour à feu » à Cap-Chat.Le cap, depuis des années, était un repère important pour les navigateurs.L'absence d'une « lumière » la nuit lui enlevait son caractère stratégique.
