Abstract
La sociologie catholique du catholicisme étudie la place du catholicisme dans les sociétés avec des méthodes scientifiques et objectivantes, dans un but partiellement spirituel ou pastoral. Cet article s’intéresse au destin de ce champ disciplinaire dans le cadre français, en le saisissant en lien avec les positions personnelles de ses principaux protagonistes. Impulsée par un universitaire, Gabriel Le Bras, au début des années 1930, la sociologie catholique du catholicisme ne prend son essor qu’après 1945, avec le concours d’hommes d’Église, au premier rang desquels figure Fernand Boulard. Son succès, qui repose sur une coopération entre monde académique et monde ecclésial, est néanmoins fragile. L’auteur s’attache à analyser les raisons de sa délégitimation dans le monde universitaire (au milieu des années 1950) puis dans le monde catholique (au milieu des années 1960) tout en s’interrogeant sur une éventuelle postérité.
